Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Education and How to Help

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and while we here at Amanda Hope are passionate about our warriors every day of the year by providing Comfycozy’s for Chemo, educational resources, financial assistance, and free counseling support services, we feel it is especially important to educate others during this time. Childhood cancer rates have been rising slightly for the past few decades and in 2020 alone, 11,050 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer.

After accidents, cancer is the second leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 14. About 1,190 children under the age of 15 are expected to die from cancer in 2020.

More facts about Childhood Cancer:

  • Each year in the U.S., an estimated 15,780 children aged 0-19 are diagnosed with cancer.

  • Approximately 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday.

  • Globally there are more than 300,000 children diagnosed with cancer each year.

  • 20% of children with cancer in the U.S. will not survive it.

  • Every 3 minutes a family hears the devastating words that their child has been diagnosed with cancer.

  • Cancer remains the number 1 cause of death by disease for children in America.

The types of cancers that develop in children are often different from the types that develop in adults. Unlike many cancers in adults, childhood cancers are not strongly linked to lifestyle or environmental risk factors, and only a small number of childhood cancers are caused by DNA (genes) that are passed from parents to their child. What this means is that CANCER CAN AFFECT ANY CHILD, regardless of their environment or genetics.

Our incredible their warriors battle every day, but here are some ways YOU can support these incredible families, not just in September!
