MENtal Health: Men and Their Mental Health

June is Men’s Mental Health month, and here at Amanda Hope, we aim to support every member of the family.
Sadly, there is stigma surrounding men’s mental health, especially here in America. Men and boys are often told to “man up” or “toughen up” rather than being free to express their emotions. This can often lead to the men in our lives bottling up their emotions and shutting down.
Statistics:
Over 6 million men suffer from depression each year
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, men died by suicide 3.63 times more often than women in 2019
Gay and bisexual men have a higher likelihood of developing mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression, and are at an increased risk for suicide attempts
Despite these shockingly high numbers, men are still less likely to seek support for their mental health. The fear of looking “weak” or “not manly” keeps them away. Seeking support for mental health is one of the bravest things men, women, or nonbinary individuals of all ages can do. Speaking about your struggles leads to learning better coping skills, feeling mentally stronger, and helps to gain insight in how to best support your loved ones.
